Chapter 11

“HOW the hell do you expect me to react, Danny?”

“Well, I don’t expect you to ignore my texts and e-mails for three days. That’s just passive aggressive.”

“Don’t give me that American therapy bollocks. I was mad with you and didn’t want to talk to you until I had calmed down. End of story.”

“So how the hell are we meant to sort it out if we don’t talk about it?”

“We’re talking about it now. So go on, how did you expect me to react?”

“Greg, it wasn’t like I had arranged to meet up with them. They were in the same bar as we were. We bumped into them. They weren’t even out together. They were in the bar separately with other friends.”

“So you thought, ‘Hey! I know, l haven’t seen Brett or Mark for a while, let’s all arrange to head out for dinner the next night and then go to a club afterward.’”

“It wasn’t my idea. It was Tucker who suggested it. I had already said that I wasn’t in DC for any particular reason other than visiting, so they knew I had nothing planned. Even if I had made something up, Tucker would have thrown me under the bus.”

“So why didn’t you tell me that morning?”

“Because I knew you’d be upset about it.”

“Right, so don’t pretend like you don’t know why I am mad, Danny. If you knew I was going to be this way about it, don’t act as if you have done nothing wrong.”

“Okay, what did you expect me to do?”

“Make excuses so you don’t spend the night with two of your exes, one of which Tucker said that he was sure you were going to marry. How did you think I would feel whilst being stuck here in the arse end of India?”

“Greg, that was a long time ago, and we weren’t as emotionally involved at the time as Tucker thinks we were, and you know that there isn’t anything even remotely emotional there now. How do you think I felt about it? I had to sit there with the two of them all night. It was damn awkward. Ask Tucker. I talked about you all evening.”

“Yeah, that’s an idea. I will chat to Tucker about it. That won’t wind me up at all!”

“Oh for fuck sake, Greg. You’re letting this wind you up.”

“Of course I am. Not only am I pissed off that Tucker thought it was appropriate to suggest such a thing, you thought it was okay to go along with it!”

“Anyone would think you didn’t trust me! Look, I know I feel absolutely nothing about them, so I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.”

“But you knew I would be angry about it?”

“Yes.”

“And you still did it, Danny.”

“Yes, and I told you about it. It’s not like I’ve lied to you, Greg. I understand why you’re mad, but not why you’re this mad.”

“It wasn’t just one ex, Danny, it was two! Two of your old flames got to spend time with you while I couldn’t.
